Sabella hopeful of fit Messi

Argentina Coach Alejandro Sabella has reflected on his hope Lionel Messi can recover and remain fit until the World Cup.

The 26-year-old is back in his homeland undergoing the second part of a recovery programme designed for a torn muscle in the back of his thigh.

The fourth and most severe injury suffered for the striker in 2013, his national team Coach hopes 2014 has a clearer path towards the World Cup.

“Leo will recover and he should arrive in good condition come the World Cup,” Sabella has commented this week.

“Hopefully, nothing else happens to him up until June. He is currently with the national team’s physio [Luis Garcia]. Next week someone from Barcelona will arrive too and together we will monitor him.

“Everybody wants to see him well.

“Football is like that. Tomorrow he or any other member of our squad can be injured.”

Sabella was also asked for comment on his squad selection in the goalkeeping department, having consistently overlooked the likes of Malaga’s Willy Caballero.

“I still value the ability of [River Plate’s] Barovero and of Caballero, who is another great goalkeeper, but I have to chose and the confidence of the Coach in his players is key.”
