Martino eyes trophies, not records

Tata Martino says he is more focused on matching Pep Guardiola’s record trophy haul at Barcelona than his unbeaten start to a season.

The Argentine can level Guardiola’s 21-game unbeaten start to a season in all competitions with the Blaugrana, achieved in 2011-12, by avoiding defeat to Ajax in the fifth matchday of the Champions League group stage tonight.

However, when asked of the possible achievement, the 51-year-old was blunt.

“I would like the record of 2010 – with six trophies in the cabinet,” reflected Martino, before once more commenting on debate over the team’s playing style.

“I cannot compare [with previous sides] because the Barca I saw then was from afar and on television and to know them you have be with them.

“We have a commitment to aesthetic, because history says so, and winning. We must improve so as to reach the excellence that this team has always had.”

The Coach turned focus on to Tuesday evening’s encounter at the Amsterdam ArenA.

“I always considered Ajax as a great team who know what they need to do on the pitch. They are technically skilled and they know how to play.

“I do not know if they are any better or worse than at the Camp Nou, but know that we are going to face a difficult opponent and I am convinced that they can come second in the group.

“Our intention is to win, no matter what match Barcelona plays in, if it is at home, away, against whatever opponent, Barcelona always plays to win.

“We want to play beautiful football, we are committed to that, we do not want just to win, but we will continue work to win every match with beautiful football.

“The link between the clubs? When I walk through the halls I see the photos of the people who are responsible for the style of Barcelona.

“Many Dutch players, and also Ajax, have certainly been very important for the style of Barcelona.”

Barca are without a number of first team players through injury at the moment, including Lionel Messi.

“In my eyes we're missing the best player in the world so that's always a bit difficult, but we have other players who can play and maintain the quality of our team.

“So if we don't win tomorrow it's not because Messi isn't playing.”
