Benzema: I’m a team player

Karim Benzema has mused on a recent lull in form as ‘the hardest moment in my career’, as he asserts his happy mentality for France.

The Real Madrid striker recently ended respective goalless runs both for his club and his country, which saw him lose his place for Les Bleus too.

“It was the hardest moment of my career,” Benzema has discussed with L’Equipe this week.

“I analysed this period as down to a lack of luck. Every day they talked about me. If I was not doing well, I was the first to admit it.

“After the draw against Georgia, I did not look for excuses.”

Such results saw France finish second in their World Cup qualification group behind Spain and they now face a two-legged play-off with Ukraine for a place at Brazil 2014.

“We will give everything in these two games. We go out there to qualify, I am certain. There is no other option.

“This is the World Cup, the most beautiful and also this is a World Cup in a footballing country.

“What if I don’t start the play-offs? The Coach has confidence in me, but if he chooses not to place me as a starter, it is not a problem for me.

“I am a team player for France.”
