Martino: No Messi concern

Tata Martino has defended Lionel Messi’s Clasico performance and revealed the intention to have him try different positions for Barcelona this season.

The Argentine was notably quiet for Barca in Saturday’s Clasico win over Real Madrid, but his Coach has reflected that he is not concerned.

“From the inside, we have no concerns about Leo. I am not concerned that he has not scored because the contribution made for the team is of paramount importance,” Martino reflected to reporters today.

“His presence is always encouraging and physically he is well, his condition is perfect, the other day he played 90 minutes.

“We talked with Leo at the start of the season because lately he has been playing as a false 9.

“We spoke about using him in different positions, such as playing on the right wing, or behind the striker, as he as done with Argentina.

“These changes are so that he can become more destabilising. Moreover, it is always good in facing any obstacle if he can change his position.

“It is normal when he is scoring more, but we have found variety. At the end of the season, he will remain the top scorer.”
