Xabi Prieto says Real Sociedad face a tough task in even making the Europa League, after being ‘broken’ by an early goal against Manchester United.
The Basques picked up a third successive defeat in the Champions League group phase on Wednesday night due to Inigo Martinez’s early own goal.
“We are sad, we dreamed of victory but it was not possible,” Prieto consider post match.
“We came here to win, but the goal right at the start has broken us. We pushed forward and wanted to do well, but it was like a bucket of cold water and it cost us to try and come back.
“We have had good moments, before the break, with our chances, but they also had more in the second half. United were better.
“For all the players, for the fans and for me this was special. It has not gone as expected, but we appreciate the fans who came and made this effort.
“The Europa League? There are three games left and we will try to win all three, though it is very difficult to qualify.”
