Llorente: Ref affected things

Fernando Llorente felt that Giorgio Chiellini’s red card for Juventus was harsh and affected the team’s chances against Real Madrid.

Llorente had equalised for the Bianconeri in Wednesday evening’s Champions League Group B fixture in the Spanish capital, before Madrid edged ahead for a 2-1 lead before the break through Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty.

The Portuguese’ second of the night proved decisive in the match, with an early second-half sending off for Chiellini seeing the Italians struggle for a way back.

“The sending off was a real pity as it was a wonderful match with both sides having chances to win,” mused Llorente afterwards.

“To send off the player for the move that comes to mind, he was not the last man, I found it very harsh.

We had our chances, but the referee affected the game.

“We are not looking great in the standings but we still have our chances of qualifying. There are a lot of games left to play.

“We've still got Madrid and FC Copenhagen at home while there will be opportunities to win in Turkey. We leave here with our heads held high and will remain calm while thinking about the next game.”

Llorente was given an applause by the Santiago Bernabeu when substituted during the second half.

“I was really happy with the ovation I received from the fans. Every time I come here I am treated really well. It's a lovely thing to return and play here in Spain.”
