Simao: We can upset Atleti

Simao Sabrosa has acknowledged former side Atletico Madrid’s title credentials, but says current side Espanyol are capable of a result this weekend.

Week 9 sees Los Pericos host the current joint-League leaders at Cornella-El Prat, with one of the more experienced in their number optimistic.

“We will enter the field with the same intensity,” stated Simao to reporters this week.

“They have more points and more titles, but in a game it is still just XI against XI and we want to win.

“We must be stronger than them, be more focused, with more attitude and disputing for every ball.

“Atleti are a super strong block. They are an opponent who suffocates and who is strong in defence. We are similar. Nowadays in football, working together sees a team more likely to win.

“Along with Barca, Atletico are the form team in La Liga. It will not be easy, but if they continue at this level then they will have chances of fighting for the League title.”

The 33-year-old also sees the game as a meeting with his former employers. Of Atleti’s current workforce, Simao was asked of his view on Diego Costa.

“I know him as a player and have trained with him. He is a player who always wants more and gives up no ball as lost.

“He is a motivated player and now everything is going well for him. He is very powerful and works for the team.”
