Varane backs Benzema to come good

Raphael Varane is backing club and international teammate Karim Benzema to end his barren spell with France.

Varane says his Real Madrid colleague is fully aware of the criticism he has faced for his lack of effectiveness in front of goal, having not scored for his country since June 2012, and has asked for him to be granted time to regain his accuracy.

“There has been criticism of him but he is totally focused on his objectives. He knows what he wants to do and where he wants to go, so it’s up to him to work on it

“During your career there are some periods that are more difficult than others. People must leave him alone and give him time to produce his best,” the youngster told reporters.

Central defender Varane, who has been out injured for five months, is the surprise choice in Didier Deschamp’s squad for Friday’s friendly with Australia and next week’s final Group I World Cup 2014 qualifier against Finland.

“Some moments are harder than others, that’s normal, but five months is enough. I’ve think I’ve coped with it sensibly, although it’s true I’ve been impatient at times,” admitted the 20-year-old, who says he has worked tremendously hard in recent weeks to get back to full fitness.

“I did what I had to do to return to competition. It’s always a great pleasure and a source of pride to return with Les Bleus.

“The Coach has shown enormous confidence in me. That has allowed me to return to the group and claim back my place. It’s nice,” he added.
