Musacchio praises Villarreal start

Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio has praised his team’s impressive start to the season following last term’s promotion.

The Yellow Submarine have lost just one of their opening eight games and occupy fourth place in the table, and the Argentine centre-back insists it was imperative the 3-0 weekend defeat of Granada was the perfect pick-me-up after the previous week’s loss at Real Betis.

“This team generates a good feeling, is very strong and above all has a lot of confidence in everything it does,” the 23-year-old told reporters.

“We wanted revenge after the defeat to Betis and were desperate to beat Granada so we could get to the international break with 17 points, which is a good figure and leaves us in a good position.

“There may be some bad performances and results to come, but I think we can face that with confidence and playing like we are at the moment we can put things right.”

One of the keys to Villarreal’s great start has been the defensive security boss Marcelino’s men have shown, with only Barcelona and Atletico Madrid having conceded fewer goals.

“It’s true we are stronger in defence and that’s because we defend as a unit, not only the defenders.

“This helps to give us confidence because letting in so few goals and allowing so few chances greatly helps the team,” explained Musacchio, who was asked about his chances of adding to the two Argentine national team caps he has won so far.

“I wish and hope that happens. If the team continues to play as it has then you always have a better chance.

“Therefore, if we carry on like this then hopefully I’ll get my reward.”
