Alderweireld: Simeone says I’ll play

Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld has still to make his debut for the club following his summer move from Ajax.

Even so, the Belgian international insists he is not worried about his situation and that Atleti boss Diego Simeone has told him he will get his chance sooner or later.

“It’s true I’ve not played a minute but I have a good relationship with the Coach,” maintained the 24-year-old in an interview with AS.

“I’m training well so we’ll see what happens. Simeone has told me I’ll get my opportunity and that makes me worry less.

“We have a good group of players here and I’ve had no problem adapting to things. Besides, as you know, I get along really well with [Thibaut] Courtois, who I also link up with for Belgium.”

Despite not having played this season, Alderweireld believes he has improved as a player since he made the move to La Liga.

“I’m at the best club in Spain for me. If I was playing in the Belgian League then I’m sure I’d be in the starting line-up every week, but I wouldn’t get any better.

“However, here I feel I’m improving and this experience is also helping me grow so I can do better with my national side.

“If I didn’t play for six months then that could prove a problem, but in my case it’s only been a month.

“I need to play, I know that, but I’m confident about what will happen,” he asserted.
