Manchester United’s attempts to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera appear to have floundered at the final hurdle.
The Red Devils were believed to have been willing to pay the player’s release clause with Bilbao, but Sky Sports’ Guillem Balague has revealed tonight that the deal has been called off.
Herrera was reported to have been prepared to lower his wage demands in a bid to make the move to Old Trafford, with the money for his release understood to have been due to be deposited with the Spanish League today.
However, early reports are that the deal is all but dead in the water save a last-minute about-turn.
