Javi Lopez encouraged by Espanyol

Javi Lopez sees a positive ‘balance’ and mood at Espanyol heading into the international break, as Los Periquitos are unbeaten.

Javier Aguirre’s side played out a goalless draw with Real Betis on Sunday afternoon to end the first three weeks of the season without defeat and currently sixth in the table.

“The balance before the break is very positive,” Javi Lopez enthused to reporters today.

“We know that we are working well and are getting good results. We have not yet lost a game, we came back from an adverse situation against Celta, we got a good win against Valencia and yesterday, against Betis, we have drawn the game, unable to win it.

“We would have liked to have gone into the break with seven points, but this has still been a pretty serious and solid Espanyol.

“If not then we would have confronted this break with a bad taste in our mouth and with work to do in a different manner. Now, we are happy.”

The full-back commented on the defensive strength of the team.

“The defence is not only the one line at the back, it is a team effort. From the first teammate who is in attack, with pressure and making it uncomfortable we look to take the ball from our opponent.

“This is what we have working on since the summer.

“My own performance? I hate to rate myself, it is not my place to do that. I am part of a team and when the group works well then all members of it benefit.”
