Javier Mascherano conceded that Barcelona were made to work hard for their Supercopa de Espana triumph against a ‘tough’ Atletico Madrid.
The Catalans dominated possession on Wednesday evening in the second leg of the season curtain raiser, only to draw 0-0 and win the trophy on the away goals rule after last week’s 1-1 draw in Madrid.
“We had our chances, but we went up against a very difficult team,” commented Mascherano post-match.
“This is a winning and combative Atletico side, they are very tough. They played an intelligent game both here and in Madrid, both matches were even.
“This club demands victory. There will be days where we play better, but today the Super Cup had to stay here.”
Barca relied on Victor Valdes to produce key saves in the match too.
“He is one of the best ‘keepers in the world. There are people who doubted him but today he showed how professional he is.”
