Alonso undergoes surgery

Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso has undergone surgery on Thursday ahead of beginning a projected three-month recovery from a fractured metatarsal.

The midfielder, who was working his way back to full fitness after groin surgery in the summer, fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot during training on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old underwent a surgical procedure on the injury in Murcia on Thursday early afternoon and is now believed to be facing as long as three months on the sidelines.
