UEFA have opted to uphold their decision to ban Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid’s European Super Cup clash with Sevilla.

European football’s governing body issued the punishment after the midfielder, who was suspended for last season’s Champions League final, jumped onto the field in celebration after Los Blancos scored against Atletico Madrid.

The Bernabeu club argued that while Alonso did jump onto the field, he did not enter within the boundaries of play or disturb proceedings in any way.

Nevertheless, UEFA’s decision to reject the appeal means he will now miss the match in Cardiff on August 12, where Madrid will take on last season’s Europa League winners.
