‘Cristiano to play where he wants’

Carlo Ancelotti has praised Real Madrid’s ‘compactness’ against LA Galaxy and asserted that Cristiano Ronaldo will determine his position on the pitch.

Los Blancos ran out comfortable winners over their MLS opponents overnight in Phoenix, with two goals from Karim Benzema and one from Angel di Maria starting the team’s International Champions Cup campaign with a 3-1 win.

“Overall we played well. We have created many opportunities to score,” Ancelotti commented to reporters post-match.

“I am very satisfied. The team has tried to play a good game and that’s the most important thing for me.

“The goalscorers Di Maria and Benzema? They played very well and have managed to score. But the bottom line is that we wanted to play compact and the team has.

“It was a good game. Cristiano and Kaka also played well together, they have created several chances.”

The Italian assessed the value of this preseason tour of the US.

“The team needs to play against teams that are well prepared so as to get into the best shape for the start of the season.

“Some players are not in the best physical condition and that is why we have made changes, to avoid possible injury.”

The Coach was asked of his plans for Ronaldo and suggested that the Portuguese will have as much input as him.

“Cristiano needs to play in the position that he wants to.

“I’m not going to change his position because he is comfortable where he plays.

“He is the one who has to choose his position on the field.”
