Valdes targeting European Cup

Victor Valdes has commented once more that his decision to leave Barcelona next summer is ‘irreversible’, as he also describes an ideal finale.

The goalkeeper is staying on with the Blaugrana for 2013-14 for what will be the final year of his contract.

It is a choice that 31-year-old has reiterated today and has him already considering how he’d like to end his time at the Camp Nou.

“My decision is irreversible. What I said at the time, I stand by and there is nothing more to add,” Valdes told reporters today.

“I out myself at the disposal of the club to try and reach a beneficial situation for both parties and in the end we decided to go for one more season in Barcelona and then end the contract.

“An ideal farewell? I’d like to leave after lifting another European Cup, that would be a very nice end to this cycle.”

The goalkeeper, who was talking at a presentation for his change in sponsorhip of gloves, also commented on the change in Coach at the club, brought on by Tito Vilanova’s relapse of cancer.

“It is news that you never want to hear. He has been through a tough time and has had great misfortune. Now he has to focus on winning this game and I am sure that he will.

“Martino? He’s someone that is very close to the players. I have had the opportunity to chat with him and his staff.

“He is an ambitious person and he has a very large project in mind, and he will want to put his mark on it.

“He has asked us not to get tired of winning.”

Barca are once more expected to be up against Real Madrid for a majority of the silverware available this season.

“[Carlo] Ancelotti is a great Coach, Real Madrid have been reinforced with great players. Like every year, they are a force to be reckoned with.

“Madrid move up a notch every season and our obligation is to try and be a step ahead of that.”

Barca’s attempts to remain ahead of their rivals includes the signing of Neymar for €57m.

“We have to thank to the club for this great signing and my experience tells me that big signings are always tailored to each other.

“He is a player who has impressed me a lot, I was impressed at the Confederations Cup, he has improved a lot since I faced him at the Club World Cup [in December 2011].”
