Wolfsburg in dig at Atletico

Wolfsburg director of football Mike Schussler has had a dig at Atletico Madrid as the Spaniards again chase midfielder Diego.

The Brazilian international helped Atleti to the Europa League crown in the 2011-2012 season while on loan at the Vicente Calderon, but returned to the Bundesliga last summer after the clubs failed to agree terms over a permanent transfer.

Now, however, the Madrid club are again making noises about bringing the 28-year-old back to the Spanish capital, although Schussler believes the player will remain at the Volkswagen Arena, and he delivered a thinly-disguised dig at Los Rojiblancos.

“Maybe their interest is not so great. Or it could be they can’t afford this transfer,” Schussler told Wolfsburg Allgemeine Zeitung.

His comments were backed up by Wolfsburg general manager Klaus Allofs.

“Our intention is that Diego continues with us and we are not worried,” he said.

Although the player has never publicly acknowledged he would like a return to Atletico, it is believed he would prefer to play Champions League football next term, particularly since next year’s World Cup is to be held in his native country and he wants to cement a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squad.
