‘In the final the stats are worthless’

Gabi Fernandez has rejected the idea that Real Madrid’s 14-year unbeaten run over Atletico Madrid will affect the outcome of the Copa del Rey Final.

Atleti head out to the Santiago Bernabeu this evening without a win over their city neighbours since 1999, in a run that stretches to the last 25 games.

“On Friday the statistics are worthless. It is a unique opportunity to forget the hard times and to move forward to the new history of Atletico Madrid,” Gabi enthused to reporters in his pre-match conference.

“The team is in very good condition and has had a very good season. We reached our goal and we had enough time to prepare the final. We want to win.

“I believe that we've been working hard to get to this final in the best way possible. Whatever happens the team has grown, we are more consistent and are currently up there with the best.

“Real Madrid is one of the best teams in the world and in the end you have to play them. We start with great enthusiasm and with hard work hopefully we will win the final.”
