‘Messi is Messi, but also very lucky’

Real Betis Foundation President Rafael Gordillo has lamented Lionel Messi’s ability but also his luck in scoring twice for Barcelona yesterday.

The Argentine came on in the second half of Barca’s match at home to Los Beticos to score a spectacular free-kick and then finish of a neat team move to secure a 4-2 result to the Camp Nou side.

“Messi is Messi, but he has been very, very lucky, because he has come on and the first ball he has touched he has scored with, nothing more,” commented former Betis player and director Gordillo to Canal Plus.

“When he arrived in Spain, he did not have these free-kicks. As a professional and as the good player that he is, it shows that he has rehearsed his free-kicks.

“Could Betis have beaten Barca yesterday? When you see Barca as they are and with our manner of play, we could have done so.

“In the second half we dropped a little below our performance level. It is difficult to win at Barcelona or Madrid.

“Barcelona rested Messi against Bayern so that he could play against Betis…”
