‘German football taking over’

Ottmar Hitzfeld believes European football is ‘on the verge of a change in control’ as Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich head into their semi-finals.

The Bundesliga duo go into this week’s Champions League second leg tests away to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively with healthy 4-1 and 4-0 leads to defend.

For Hitzfeld, who won the Champions League with both German sides, it is a sign of a change in the balance of power in the game.

“We are on the verge of a change in control in European football, but now Bayern and Borussia Dortmund must endorse what they did in the first leg against Barcelona and Real Madrid,” Hitzfeld told bundesliga.de today.

“I know how hard it is to play at the Santiago Bernabeu. An early goal from Madrid and under those stadium lights will open up the possibility of a miracle.

“I’m convinced that Dortmund can reach the final with Bayern, but the task will not be easy.

“For Bayern, the 4-0 is like life insurance. Even with the best will I cannot imagine that Barcelona will score four goals against Bayern again, like in 2009.

“Now Bayern have another role, which is much more dominant.”
