‘Barca the most difficult possible’

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness has conceded that the Champions League semi-final draw with Barcelona was ‘the most difficult tie’ possible.

The Germans will host Barca next Tuesday in the first leg of their last four clash, before travelling out to the Camp Nou for the return leg eight days later on May 1.

For Hoeness, it was a scenario that Bayern would have preferred not to have faced, although he believes Barca may also be thinking the same.

“Barcelona was the most difficult tie that we could have had,” the former forward told Servus TV today.

“We wanted to play the first game away and the return at home, but that did not happen either.

“This aside, the more I think, this is a great challenge and if you want to win the Champions League then you have to beat every team. Also, I’m not convinced that they wanted us either.”

Coach Jupp Heynckes will leave his position with the Bavarians in the summer to be replaced by former Barca Coach Pep Guardiola.

“For Heynckes, he is having a great season in his final year at Bayern. His work has been perfect and has been rewarded with titles.

“Hopefully it will stay that way up to the end of the season because he deserves to leave through the front door.

“Guardiola’s arrival is proof that our philosophy is correct. That he chose us so quickly was wonderful. He has great character and a personality that will fit very well in the club.”
