Liga technology in two-three years

The Spanish Football League’s director general Francisco Roca has indicated that goalline technology will be introduced in ‘the next two or three years’.

The Premier League has this week handed Hawk-Eye a contract to provide goalline technology in England’s top flight from next season at a cost of around €300,000 installation at each ground.

Speaking in the country on the day this was confirmed, LFP head Roca indicated that Spain will look to follow suit shortly.

“We are truly advocates for technology and we will look at the systems and the cost,” he told the Soccerex conference this week.

“We are not going to be as quick as the Premier League but we are in favour of the system.

“I expect that in two or three years we will be able to do something like this either with technology that we buy or that we create ourselves, because we already have a system in place that can do something like this.

“We need to see which system is less expensive to put together or to maintain.”

Roca revealed that Spain are already using cameras in grounds, monitored by the League, and that they are after technology to also assist match officials in determining offside calls.

“We've seen especially in the last few weeks the real problems that referees have differentiating when it is an offside position.

“Right now the technology is there, we can come up with solutions to help referees to make good calls and not bad calls.

“We started technological development three or four years ago, we came up with a system in which we measure our competition with video cameras in a central way.

“Everybody sees what happens with everybody else. We have that in place which is a huge investment but which is working extremely well.”
