Terim: Gala deserve respect

Fatih Terim was proud of his Galatasaray players’ efforts against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, before wishing the Spaniards well.

Gala scored three goals in the second half of yesterday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg to briefly threaten a dramatic comeback from 3-0 down in the first leg and 4-0 down at the time on aggregate.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo popped up with a second goal on the night to settle the tie 5-3 to Los Blancos, but it did not leave the hosts’ Coach downbeat.

“Maybe we could not knock Real Madrid out of the competition but I think we deserve the respect of the whole world,” Terim told reporters afterwards.

“Our half-time team talk was on the desire not to lose the game and this brought the victory. After the third goal, we started to dream about the semi-finals.

“I hope Real Madrid win the Champions League and we can say that we lost to the champions. There is nothing that Turkish players cannot achieve.

“You should not concede goals this easily and miss chances this generously. We need to improve every minute.

“We need to keep our heads high and continue our way.”
