Frank Leboeuf has enthused at Raphael Varane’s current ascent, reflecting that he is looking even better than Real Madrid legend Fernando Hierro.
Varane has come into his own this term with Madrid and has just made his first two international appearances for France, including the one game against Spain on Tuesday.
Having seen the 19-year-old perform capably in both, compatriot and former France centre-back Leboeuf is inspired by him.
“At the highest level, you have to be very calm, and he is,” commented the former Chelsea defender.
“Many compare him to Hierro for his technique, but he is physically stronger and much faster.
“But it is not defenders that always make the front pages. His head is in the right place and he has a bright future.
“When he arrived at Madrid, he was one of the few guys who did not talk about money before football.
“He has an adult mentality. He wanted to work and improve. He has a coolness that I like.”
