‘Getafe must be ambitious’

Luis Garcia has dismissed Getafe’s best-ever points tally at this stage of a season as unimportant if nothing is achieved at the end of it.

After a turnaround in form, the Coach has taken the team to 39 points after 27 rounds of League action, which is the club’s highest points total in La Liga by this stage of the season.

Even so, Garcia is not taking it as too strong an encouragement.

“Today we are the best in the League, but in the Cup, no. Things are noted at the end of the season,” commented the 40-year-old in an interview with Mundo Deportivo today.

“It’s good because it means that if we are the highest scoring Getafe in the League then it is because the team is good and strong.

“But it is not worth anything unless we win the next game against Athletic. We must be ambitious to achieve something by the end of the season.

“Europe? The goal is Athletic. We have to think game by game, winning three points on Saturday and when there are five or six games remaining then we can tell if we are in the fight for it.

“The team are in a good way and are thinking game by game and we will not move one iota until five or six games remain.”

Garcia was asked why he believes Getafe are doing well again, with four wins from the last six games recorded.

“We are one of the teams that has the most goalscorers in La Primera. We are a group that is complete, we have very good days when we play very well and we get everything, whilst we have now also taken a step forward to get the result when we are not playing well.

“This is what great teams do. For now, we are happy because the main objective is to always keep Getafe in the League and from there to go as high as possible.

“Now, with 39 points, survival is almost assured. It has been a very good job from the players, working together, we are now looking forward and hopefully we can provide the chance to achieve something nice.”

The weekend sees the Madrid side host Athletic Bilbao.

“Athletic also come into this in good form, they have two straight wins. They are always a good team. We are two teams that both hope to be there, without the position at the moment, but with the aspirations to be there.

“I had expected Athletic to be higher in the table, but they still have good players. I think it will be a nice game because Getafe-Athletic meetings have always been very entertaining.”
