Cakir defends Nani red card

The referee that sent off Manchester United’s Luis Nani in the midweek match with Real Madrid has defended his actions.

Turkish official Cuneyt Cakir dismissed the Portuguese during his team’s Champions League Last 16 second leg with Los Blancos, after which Jose Mourinho’s men took advantage to score twice and record a 2-1 win on the night and a 3-2 win on aggregate.

Despite coming under intense criticism in Britain since, Cakir told AS this week that he believes he made the right call.

“I feel fine and do not doubt my decisions. The red card for Nani was correct. The world will realise the truth in time,” commented the official.

“The criticism does not make my unhappy. I do not think about it. I have received much criticism at other times, but I have always lifted myself up and carried on.

“I can do it again. I try and do my work correctly, and I am on a good path. I must keep going like this. I do my work perfectly.”
