‘United have to be very careful’

Former Manchester United full-back Gary Neville cannot pick between The Red Devils and Real Madrid in their midweek Champions League clash.

The two sides prepare to meet this Tuesday for the second leg of their Last 16 clash, with the first leg tied at 1-1.

For Neville, who spent 19 years at Old Trafford, it is a game that his former team have to be ‘very careful’ about.

“I’ll be honest. I’ve been asked hundreds of times and I think that I have to say that things are 50-50. Both teams rely heavily on their attacks, for their great potential,” commented the 38-year-old to AS this week.

“I see that for Madrid their whole season depends on the Champions League. That can certainly be a positive, it will help them concentrate their efforts. But there is also an element of pressure added.

“If you weigh out the pros and cons of both teams then it would be very balanced. Even the fact that the second leg is at Old Trafford doesn’t help me. I do not want to hide, but I see the teams as matched.

“United will have to be very careful. There is speculation about the future of Jose Mourinho, but he won the Champions League with Porto and Inter. To win with Madrid would be extraordinary.

“Also for the players, who are certain to be at their best in Europe – 100.1 per cent is mathematically impossible, but not in football. Even so, it is risky to leave everything on one competition.”
