Jones ruled out of Madrid clash

Phil Jones has been ruled out of Manchester United’s midweek clash with Real Madrid, but Rio Ferdinand could be picked.

Jones, who was responsible for marking Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg, has been a doubt for Tuesday’s fixture since suffering an ankle injury last month.

Whilst he was described by manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Friday as having a slight chance of making Tuesday’s Champions League Last 16 second leg clash, today the Scot has confirmed that he will not be included in the matchday squad.

Meanwhile, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans worked separate from the main group in this morning’s training session, but it is not seen as a determining factor for their availability this midweek.

There was better news as well in the case of Rio Ferdinand, who was rested at the weekend amid reports of being unwell. The former England centre-back took part in the full session today.
