Courtois: Bernabeu final is fine

Thibaut Courtois believes that playing the Copa del Rey Final at the Vicente Calderon or Santiago Bernabeu is fine, as both will feel like home.

The Belgian’s side are set to face off against city rivals Real Madrid in this year’s edition of the Cup competition final, but a location and date for the game is yet to be determined.

The decision is set to be between the Camp Nou in Barcelona, or one of the Bernabeu or Calderon in Madrid.

For Courtois, a capital venue would hold most value and, in his eyes, feel like home either way.

“The Calderon is fine for the final because it will be half and half for the fans, whilst if we play at the Bernabeu it will also be fine because 40,000 fans will make it feel like we are playing at home,” commented the goalkeeper to Onda Cero.

Courtois was speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw at La Rosaleda against Malaga.

“A goalless draw at Malaga is a good result and it is even better for the clean sheet. All players want to be first and so it is a shame also that we could not cut the gap to Barcelona.”

The young shot-stopper was also asked for his view on Atleti’s early elimination from the Europa League this season.

“We wanted to go far, but we do not have a large squad. Maybe we can pick up more points after the elimination, because we do not have to travel as much now and we have more time to rest.

“As a player, you want to win everything. The Europa League had given us a lot of joy. But it costs a lot to play a game every two or three days.”
