‘Messi is great, but I was the best’

Diego Maradona has declared that he is still the world’s greatest player ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Maradona, who coached Messi at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, is generally heralded as one of the game’s greatest talents, alongside Brazil’s Pele.

Back in Italy this week to try and settle an outstanding tax debt with local authorities in Naples, the former Napoli and Barca forward was asked to consider Messi, who is being put forward for his record-breaking stats as a rival to Pele and Maradona.

“For me, he is a great player, but I believe that I have been the greatest,” responded Maradona today.

“I hope that Messi can give Argentina the World Cup, but it will not be easy because he is known. In the last match against Milan, they built a cage for him.”
