Barca Baena claim rejected

Barcelona will not receive further compensation from former youth player Raul Baena for breaking his contract in 2007.

The defensive midfielder broke from his youth contract at La Masia in the summer of 2007 to move across the city to rivals Espanyol, with Los Pericos paying €30,000 to Barca for his services.

However, the Camp Nou outfit took the player to court, claiming that he had in fact broken a contract that required a €3m fee to buy him out from. That was a 10-year deal signed in 2002 by Baena’s parents when he joined La Masia aged 13.

Whilst two hearings of the case first found the Barca were due €500,000 and then €3.5m, a supreme court ruling has found in favour of Baena.

The court reportedly found that the 10-year contract signed by Baena’s parents was ‘unprofessional’, with the player unable to determine his own future at that time.
