Simeone renewal ‘this month’

Atletico Madrid are reportedly intent on securing Coach Diego Simeone to a new contract by the end of February.

The Argentine tactician, who has taken the team to Europa League and UEFA Super Cup victories, a credible current League position of second and a Copa del Rey semi-final, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Whilst concern has been that he might walk away in the summer, AS understand today that he has recently asked for a two-year contract at the Vicente Calderon.

Atleti, who were thought to be offering a one-year renewal, are now seen as working towards providing this two-year package instead and are keen to tie it up by the end of the month.

Simeone is also believed to be after guarantees that the squad will not be weakened come the summer. Radamel Falcao is seen as almost certainly on his way out at the end of the season, and Simeone is reportedly after assurances that the club will suitably replace him, as well as provide further options in other positions.

El Cholo is also seen as pushing for an improved economic standing, to reflect the League position he has taken the club too.
