Reina surprised by Valdes

Pepe Reina has admitted to being surprised by Victor Valdes decision not to renew his Barcelona contract beyond June 2014.

There have been rumours that the Liverpool goalkeeper would be returning to the Camp Nou this summer to replace Valdes.

“I was surprised by Valdes’ announcement because Victor is at the best team in the world,” Reina told MoviStar this week.

“Would I replace him? When I have a contract I fulfil it and I have signed with Liverpool through to 2016.

“Barcelona are the best club in the world. I know what it means to play for them because I trained there as a player and a person.”

Reina is competing with Valdes for a starting spot this midweek for Spain, in light of Iker Casillas’ injury.

“I spoke to Iker, I sent him a message of encouragement for his recovery and I want him back with us as soon as possible. We must hope for a safe and speedy recovery, because he is one of our tools and must be cared for.

“Diego Lopez as his replacement at Madrid? He is a great ‘keeper and has a very high level to play for Real Madrid. I am surprised they signed him so quickly, but Diego is a very talented goalkeeper.

“Dropping Casillas beforehand? I think substitutions never motivate, I think there are many ways to give a warning.”

Madrid are likely without Casillas for the Champions League Last 16 clash with Manchester United starting later this month.

“United are a team with a Coach who has a tremendously competitive philosophy. He’s a very successful Coach and has the virtue that without playing a splendid game, you play worse and get beaten.

“I do not think the tie will be decided at the Bernabeu. United has an advantage because the second leg is at Old Trafford, but Madrid are able to get a good result there.”
