Diego Lopez ‘missed Madrid’

Diego Lopez enthused at the end of his second debut for Real Madrid, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona.

The goalkeeper rejoined the capital club last Friday as cover for the injured Iker Casillas and was handed a first appearance since in Wednesday’s Clasico Copa del Rey semi-final.

“I had greatly missed the atmosphere of the Bernabeu. For a madrista, it is a great joy to play here and also in a Clasico against Barcelona,” reflected the 31-year-old after his second debut for the club.

“I was relaxed throughout the match, because my teammates were very supportive. The team and the fans were fantastic. I’ll be ready for when the Coach next wants me to play.

“The result? It is a very open score. We created chance. We had two clear opportunities to make it 2-1. The tie is wide open.

“It’s a tight-knit dressing room, the team has shown their face, we were in control. We go into the second leg with options. We are able to win at the Camp Nou, let’s go there with that mentality.

“The first half we endured well, they practically created nothing. In the second half they had some dangerous chances after their goal, but with our goal, the intensity and drive to progress, it can help us eliminate Barcelona in an open tie.

“The result is not bad. The team fought to the last minute and we had chances to score the second goal. Some games are decided by the details.”
