Four-goal Messi breaks records

Lionel Messi’s four goals against Osasuna on Sunday evening earned him a further two Spanish League records.

The 25-year-old notched four times during Barcelona’s 5-1 win in Week 21 to surpass the 200-goal mark in La Liga.

The Argentine striker is only the eighth footballer in history to achieve this, after Zarra, Hugo Sanchez, Raul, Di Stefano, Cesar, Quini and Pahino. Messi is also the youngest player to have reached this total so far, beating Zarra who was 29 years and 352 days and Raul, who was 30 years and 255 days old.

Messi’s strikes on Sunday also saw him net in an 11th League fixture in a row, breaking the record for consecutive games scored in previously held at 10 with former Barca players Mariano Martin, in 1942-43, and Ronaldo, from 1996-97.

Messi has 33 League goals to his name this season, after 21 rounds of action. Only in the 2009-10 and 2011-12 season has he scored more League goals in total.
