Martinez delighted with Guardiola

Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez has admitted he was delighted when he heard that Pep Guardiola was to become the club's new Coach.

The former Barcelona boss signed a three-year deal at Allianz Arena and will take charge of the Bundesliga team from the start of next season.

And the Spain international, who signed from Athletic Bilbao in the summer, has conceded that he was pleased with yesterday's announcement.

“After learning that [current Coach Jupp] Heynckes was retiring to be replaced by Guardiola I was pleased,” he told Bayern's official website.

“It will be good for me, for the team and for the Bundesliga.

“I know him from when I played against Barcelona with Athletic – and my teammates for the national all say very positive things about him.”

The 24-year-old then remarked on where he sees himself positionally under Guardiola.

“I like to play as a midfielder,” he said. “But what's most important is that I play for the team, wherever that may be.”
