Garcia: Tie lost in first leg

Luis Garcia has reflected that Getafe’s attempts to overturn their first leg deficit against Atletico Madrid would always be difficult.

The Madrid sides played out a second leg goalless draw on Thursday night at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, to confirm Atleti’s place in the quarter-finals, thanks to December’s first-leg 3-0 win.

“Our intention was to start well. They were organised well. We struggled to find ways through and with Rafa sent off it became more complicated,” mused Garcia afterwards.

“If it is a League game and with all those minutes [an hour] to play with 10 men, to draw with Atletico Madrid would be good.

“But we are not happy. The tie was not lost here, it was lost in the Calderon, where we threw it overboard. People knew that we could not overcome that deficit.”

The Coach again faced chants in the closing stages of the game from a section of fans to resign.

“They pay for a ticket and can say whatever they want. The team is 10th in the League, which is not a bad ranking.

“Nor has it been a great season, but 10 teams would swap positions with us. We have to be together and united.”
