Nelson trying ‘not to fall apart’

Real Betis defender Nelson has lifted the lid on his torment since being marginalised from the Verdiblancos first XI.

The Portuguese full-back was notably at fault in November’s 5-1 derby defeat to Sevilla and harangued by fans at training afterwards. He hasn’t played since.

“Lately things are not well at Betis,” said the 29-year-old in a statement. “I’ve stopped playing and being an option. I respect the decision of the Coach. I can only find the strength to avoid falling apart.

“I have not lost patience because an eventual transfer always depends on the interest of other clubs and on Betis’ consent. I want to return to the team, be useful and demonstrate my value. The rest is the work of my agent.”
