Karim Benzema says that Real Madrid have not given up on the title and believe that like Barcelona last season, Madrid will have a chance to come back.
Los Blancos are currently 11 points behind the League leaders and whilst such a deficit has never been recovered in League history by a team to then win the title, Benzema believes in his side.
“Certainly things were down after the defeat to Betis in Seville. We were a little dejected, but thanks to the nice win in the derby against Atletico, our heads have raised,” he told AS today.
“Now we are back on track to try and win the League. The championship is not over.
“Of course we believe we can catch Barcelona! We believe in the comeback, nothing is decided and we will contonue fighting to win the title.
“We remember well how last season in March, we had 10 points more than Barca and then they returned to being very close to us.
“They had their chances then, so we must fight for the title. But, yes, we also cannot lose any more points.”
Benzema was asked if the temptation is there for the players to focus more on the Champions League.
“At Real Madrid titles are not chosen, we fight for them all! The goal at the beginning of every season is the same – the League, Champions League and Copa del Rey. We will not miss anything out.”
The striker featured in the midweek European win over Ajax, which although meant nothing in terms of determining group position, was valuable to Madrid, says Benzema.
“We took that game seriously because we wanted to finish the group stage with a win, especially for our fans. We knew we could not move from second place, but we did a good job, we are happy.
“We cannot be sad for not having managed top spot because the important thing was to qualify. From the knockout stages no team is easy.
“Being first or second does not change anything because if you get to the final then you have to face some very good sides.”
Benzema was also asked of his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo and of his recent run of games for the team.
“I’ve always gotten along with him and every time we have a better understanding on the pitch. I hope that in this team we can continue to grow.
“A run of games is important for me to catch some rhythm and feel good physically. I’m in good form and am working hard for it.”
