‘For us, better Mourinho stays’

Karim Benzema has declared that the Real Madrid dressing room are behind Jose Mourinho and would prefer that he stays.

The Portuguese tactician has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks surrounding his future and Monday saw Marca run the story that he has agreed to leave Madrid at the end of the current season.

For Benzema, though, the preference is in seeing his Coach remain on the bench.

“He has given me many things and has always been with me. All the team are with him. For us, it is better that he stays,” commented the Frenchman, who was talking after Madrid’s 4-1 win over Ajax.

That result was not enough to change the course of the group, with last year’s semi-finalists already assured of second spot in the group, and potentially now a harder draw for the Last 16.

“It is not a problem. We’ve qualified and now all the teams are difficult. But to get to the end you have to win every knockout game.

“I feel good and believe that we will continue in that way.”

Benzema has had indifferent form in front of goal this season and without netting on Tuesday night is now on a run of four appearances without a goal. However, he is optimistic, and also for playing with Luka Modric behind him.

“The goal will certainly come soon because I feel good. Modric is a good player who provides many good passes and that is good for Madrid.”
