Levante, Osasuna and Real Sociedad all went down to lower league opposition on a night of shocks in the Copa del Rey.

UD Melilla sparked the Copa into life on Thursday as a first half penalty from Fernando Velasco saw the third level team overcome Europa League high-flyers Levante for a first-leg lead.

Segunda Division side Cordoba also produced their own massive shock as goals from Javier Patino and Vincenzo Rennella saw them defeat Real Sociedad 2-0 at Nuevo Arcangel.

There wasn't such luck for fellow second division team Ponferradina however. Getafe showed no mercy in their tie, as two strikes from Jaime Gavilan, and one each for Pablo Sarabia and Paco Alcacer gave the Azulones a healthy 4-0 lead going into next month's second legs.

Gaston Sangoy's early goal heaped more misery on a dejected Osasuna side, as recently relegated Sporting Gijon made it a night to remember for the lower league teams.

In one of the two all-La Liga matches, Sevilla left it late to defeat Espanyol at Ramons Sanchez Pizjuan. Federico Fazio scored inside four minutes to give the home side a lead, but Christian Alfonso equalised just after the hour. It was left to Cala and then Alvaro Negredo to rescue the win with two goals in the last seven minutes.

Real Mallorca meanwhile had Pedro Geromel to thank, as his late header secured a 1-1 draw with Deportivo de La Coruna after Manuel Pablo had earlier given Jose Luis Oltra's men the lead.
