Diego Lopez has ‘nothing to prove’

Diego Lopez expects to play for Sevilla in midweek but insists that whilst he will make the most of the chance, he has nothing to prove to anyone.

The goalkeeper began the season as Los Rojiblancos’ No 1 between the sticks, but after a red card in Week 2 and subsequent suspension, has lost out to Andres Palop.

“I have nothing to prove. I assume I will play. I hope I can do well, that I feel well, but I do so every day and I feel good,” Lopez commented today to reporters, with Sevilla’s Copa del Rey clash with Espanyol on the horizon.

“Right now I think only about Thursday. If I have the opportunity then I will do my best for the team to pass this first round. I think I am doing very well every day, against Getafe I was fine, then there was the issue of the red card and from there I cannot say any more. It is the Coach who decides things.

“I’m happy, it was the same at Villarreal when I arrived there, I went the first six months without playing. I have said many times that I had other options available to me, other clubs, but I chose Sevilla, and Sevilla went for me.

“Just because there is a small setback does not mean I can give up, not even close. We have had just nine League games. Things will take many turns and my confidence and desire remain intact.”

The 30-year-old former Real Madrid man then turned his attention to Thursday’s meeting with fellow Primera outfit Espanyol.

“I approach it as a competition that we can go far in. We have been handed a difficult draw, but we managed to avoid Madrid and Barcelona.

“We are starting on Thursday against a very difficult opponent in Espanyol. Sevilla have had two different faces this term, at home and away.

“We have competed at a high level at home, against very strong teams and it has been a bit difficult for us to maintain that pace and intensity away from the Sanchez Pizjuan. I think the team is working well, we know how we can play.

“Perhaps what we need is to keep that mentality at home and away. Maybe we could take some more points away from home, that is what we all want and I think we are going to achieve that.”
