Menotti criticises Madrid

Former Argentina national team boss Cesar Luis Menotti has criticised Real Madrid’s style of football under Jose Mourinho.

Menotti, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978 when the finals were held in the South America country, is not enamoured with the way in which Los Blancos go about their business.

“Madrid could play a lot better and I say this with respect to Jose Mourinho, of course. Everybody wants to play the way they do and Madrid do that from a position of strength, with the quality of their players.

“One day it will be [Angel] Di Maria who creates a goal and another it is [Karim] Benzema, and that’s something that makes them comfortable,” the 74-year-old told Marca, before turning to Barcelona and comparing Tito Vilanova’s side with that of Pep Guardiola.

“This year they are not as good defensively. It is nothing to do with the team or anything else. The synchronisation they had with [Dani] Alves, [Carles] Puyol, [Gerard] Pique and [Eric] Abidal was perfect, alongside [Sergio] Busquets.

“Now they have lots of injuries. The idea still survives but the defensive efficiency is not the same.”

He also commented on the race for the Ballon d’Or between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and believes the Argentine is light years ahead of the Portuguese.

“The difference between them is vast. There was never such a big difference between the King and his heir, neither with [Alfredo] Di Stefano nor [Diego] Maradona. Leo is very superior,” he added.
