‘I turned down Madrid for Liverpool’

Liverpool midfielder Suso has revealed that he turned down a big money move to Real Madrid to sign for the Merseyside giants.

The 18-year-old joined the Anfield outfit from local club Cadiz in 2009 and has made the breakthrough into Brendan Rodgers first-team squad this term, impressing in substitute roles in the opening three Premier League matches.

However, Suso told Radio COPE that he almost ended up at the Santiago Bernabeu after Madrid made him an offer to remain in Spain.

“I had agreed on a contract with Real Madrid and the transfer was basically done, but then Rafael Benitez called and told me he had a lot of faith in me and that I should go to Liverpool.

“I'm glad I made this decision. I love this club and it’s the best one for me,” said Suso, who admitted he is enjoying life in England.

“I have never thought about going anywhere else. I feel comfortable here and have no intention of ever leaving.”
