Supercup success no benefit to Atleti

Atletico Madrid’s triumph over Chelsea in the European Super Cup has not left the club financially better off.

According to Marca, the €1m prize money for winning the prestigious trophy will be swallowed up in player bonuses for the achievement in Monaco on Friday night.

Los Rojiblancos banked around €10.5m for winning last season’s Europa League, with nearly €4.3m earned through their share of UEFA’s complex market pool system and the final itself worth €3m to the Madrid club.

The financial situation at the Vicente Calderon, however, is still problematic in that there is a shortage of cash in the short term, given that a €15m tax bill is due to be paid in the coming weeks.

Sources within the club have also suggested that spending on the first-team squad will remain within the desired 70 per cent of the club’s operating budget for the 2012-13 campaign.
