Pepe Mel considered Rayo Vallecano deserved their 2-1 victory at the Benito Villamarin.

The Real Betis boss saw Leo Baptista’s second-half strike give the Madrid side all three points but maintained that it was not all doom and gloom, particularly after the 5-3 win at Athletic Bilbao on the opening day.

“Rayo won because they were better than us,” Mel told a Press conference.

“We were not even in the game and it was a bad performance from us, just the opposite of the other day, and we deserved to lose.

“Even so, it’s not all bad as there are still 36 La Liga games to play and that’s an eternity.”

Mel refused to blame the defeat on the absence of key players and claimed his side committed too many errors.

“No excuses. The loss of certain players does not concern me. Everything else worried me and we have a team that needs to improve a lot.

“We did not attack or defend well and were too indecisive and hesitant.

“We lost possession too many times and when we had the ball we gave it back to them,” he added.
