Mallorca snap up Cologne defender

Real Mallorca have announced the signing of central defender Pedro Geromel from Cologne, reports Sport.

The Brazilian will be presented at the Iberostar Stadium on Thursday after successfully passing a medical with Joaquin Caparros’ team yesterday.

His arrival comes days after the acquisition of countryman Conceicao as Caparros seeks to shore up a defence that has been hit by Ivan Ramis’ defection to Premier League outfit Wigan Athletic.

Geromel, 26, moved to Europe eight years ago when he joined Portuguese side Chaves from Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and his performances attracted the attention of Vitoria Guimares, who signed him in July 2005.

His form at Guimares earned him a move to Germany, with Cologne paying €2.5m for his services three years later after he was reportedly being courted by Real Madrid.

Having signed on a season-long loan, Geromel is understood to have signed for Mallorca on a reduced salary from the €1.5m he has been earning with the German outfit.
