Bilbao will not reduce Martinez price

Athletic Bilbao will not consider selling defender Javi Martinez to Bayern Munich for anything less than his €40m asking price, according to Marca.

After a meeting between Bilbao’s management and the 23-year-old’s representatives, it appears that the Basque outfit will make no effort to accommodate Martinez’s move to the German giants.

Bayern are reluctant to directly meet the player’s buy-out clause of €40m because with tax also due on the deal, they would be paying closer to €46m.

They have reportedly appealed to Bilbao to accept an offer in the region of €35m, which would, with tax, see the Germans still pay a total of €40m for the player.

However, the Spaniards are described as resolute in their intention to only lose the midfielder for his release clause.
