Bayern sign Javi Martinez – report

German publication Bild are reporting that Bayern Munich have agreed a record €40m deal for Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez.

The midfielder, who can also play in central defence, will apparently become the Bundesliga’s most expensive signing ever, with Bayern agreeing to match the player's buy-out clause in his Athletic contract.

Bild write that the deal is still subject to final confirmation, but that the player has already agreed to a five-year contract, which included him waiving €2m a season so as to allow the Germans to fund his transfer fee.

Martinez has been heavily linked with a move out of San Mames this summer, with Barcelona rumoured to be close admirers of the Spanish international.

The midfielder has only just returned to Marcelo Bielsa’s squad for pre-season and is set to start their final friendly of the summer tonight.
